Q: Do you live in Virginia? Or do you live in the United States of America?
A: Yes.
This is at the center of whether to vote YES or NO on the referendum to temporarily redistrict the voting map for U.S. congressional elections.
If you think strictly in local terms, you may favor voting “No.” If you realize that you, your neighbors, your town, and our state are part of a larger nation, you will vote “Yes.”
President Trump urged states like Texas, Missouri and North Carolina to change their voting maps in order to tilt the November 2026 national elections in favor of Republicans. Those state legislatures obeyed his order to “nationalize” the elections, even without putting the matter to voters through a referendum. This is highly unusual; to the extent maps are redrawn, that’s typically only every 10 years, after the national decennial census.
So now, because of the tactic of the President of the United States and several states, we in Virginia face the question: whether to think solely in local terms or in national terms. And in this state, the General Assembly has put the question to us voters, rather than imposing it from on high.
The power of the federal government is unmatched and overwhelming; no single state so dominates our daily lives. The power to declare and wage war, enacting and enforcing (or deciding not to enforce) laws that protect our food, air, and water; managing international relations, deciding which medicines and vaccines are available to us; funding and operating federal programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; funding and operating agencies that govern our taxes, our civil rights, airplane travel and security, border control, immigration, deportation.
You are a Virginian, but if you are an American First, you may realize that voting YES on the referendum means voting to maintain the integrity of national elections and our national government.

This letter is a steaming cow pie of buzzwords and inaccuracies. The writer of the letter and the people behind the “Vote Yes” movement believe that the people of Page County are too stupid to know what is best for them, so others should be given the power to do so. I know the people of Page County are better and smarter than that. This is a power grab. Only the majority party in Richmond will determine what is “fair” and what is “temporary.” Meanwhile, Page County affairs will be filtered through a NOVA lens. Keep Page County Page County. Vote “No.”
No, the power grab would be Dear Leader demanding Republicans in Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, and now Florida redraw the maps to cut out the few remaining Democratic voices in those states – without putting it up for votes by citizens of those states. How can allowing citizens of Virginia vote on the new map be a “power grab?” Classic MAGA projection.
Tom Ford-if you are so concerned about the “integrity of national elections”, perhaps you should encourage Chuck Schumer and the other Democrats to vote for the Save America Act; after all, 83 percent (some polls show it as low as 79) of Americans believe that one should have to show a valid form of identification to vote. Apparently the only Democratic senator who believes that is John Fetterman, who has become an outcast within his own party. Tell me, Tom-why do all those Democrats insist on denying something their own constituents want? Is it so people who should not even be in this country can cast votes for them? One wonders …
Hey Tom, explain it to me like I’m a 5 year old. Is it bad that Trump directed some states to gerrymander? Bc if it is, then you’re just supporting what he’s doing by voting yes. But maybe you should take a look at Illinois’ voting districts and let me know if blue states aren’t gerrymandered to the max. What’s the stat? 42% of people in Massachusetts are republican but the state has zero republican reps, senators or recent governors.
Ok. Fair request. Gerrymandering is bad for democracy. It’s bad when X party does it. It’s bad when Y party does it. It’s especially bad when the president of the United States orders his party to gerrymander to the max. Gerrymandering is bad for democracy.
There was the “Battle of Athens” Tennessee in 1946 that occurred when the government perversely abused the people after power grabs. The situation got fixed.

Real Americans might also wonder that President Trump just lifted the embargo on Iranian oil. Our mortal enemies can now sell their oil to buy weapons to kill our troops. Trump says this is to reduce the oil shock he didn’t plan for caused by the Hormuz blockade he is unprepared to combat. Chaos and bluster may be fun for a while. But it always has a cost.

To All: I’ve shredded my mail-in ballot. I’m not for allowing Trump to keep on doing and saying what he does without Congressional support nor am I in favor of “temporary” measures to fix what is ailing us. Does anyone believe in Democracy as oppose to the other choices? Here’s a CRAZY idea…what would happen if everyone quit the Republican and the Democratic parties? Create an American Values party. It is absurd where this county is at. Live in peace while you can and afford better choices for future generations.
So Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, and now Florida can have new maps that eliminate Democratic voices in those states because Dear Leader demands it – and those states don’t even allow its residents to vote on the new maps (contrasted to Virginia). That’s fine. But VOTING Yes, or No, on a new map in Virginia is not fine? Do I have that correct?
